Remote Play's TagAlert(TM) Helps Secure and Track Laptops

World's Smallest Active RFID Tags Help Reduce Data Loss and Identity Theft

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Remote Play, Inc. launches the TagAlert(TM) wireless portable asset security product line that enables all organizations with a mobile workforce to avoid laptop loss or theft. TagAlert employs an unparalleled, new RF wireless technology performance feature set over short distances and up to 150 feet to help keep track of laptops. TagAlert technology also includes an innovative use of Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) ultra-low power MSP430 microcontrollers (MCU), which provide control processing to help keep the tag small and lightweight while allowing the tiny tags to operate for up to six months 24/7 without a change of batteries.

Today's proliferation of laptops has intensified the age-old tendency for people to expose confidential information. The new TagAlert promises to dramatically reduce the kind of data loss that has resulted in more than 100 million security breach incidents since 2005, at a cost of billions of dollars and incalculable damage to customer/client relations (Wired Magazine February 2007).

"Reliance on portable technology for communication is becoming dominant in all corporations and professions," said Ari Naim, president and CEO of Remote Play. "Laptop loss and theft is the single biggest source of data security breaches in the world today."

Keep Track of Your Laptop
The TagAlert comes to the market at a time when one in every ten laptops is lost or stolen. Ninety seven percent of lost laptops are never recovered. The miniature TagAlert monitor fits easily on a key ring, and the smaller tags can be readily attached to a laptop. Remote Play's patented ranging technology determines when a tagged item moves beyond a predetermined distance from the monitor and alerts the user. A switch on the monitor adjusts the alert range from short (up to 20 feet) or long (up to 150 feet) distance, and a snooze button allows the user to move briefly out of the alert range of the tag without the alarm sounding. Because each tag has a unique ID, multiple tags can be used within the same area and a single monitor can be programmed to recognize more than one tag. The patented RF technology uses multiple frequencies to avoid interference with other radio-controlled devices and provides a reliable distance measurement.

Remote Play integrated TI's ultra-low power 16-bit RISC MSP430 MCU into the TagAlert to provide the low-power processing needed for communication, identification and system control in both tags and monitors. MSP430F20xx MCUs offer a flexible clock system that allows fast operation of up to 16 MIPS with no external components using a digitally controlled oscillator (DCO). The DCO is fully programmable up to 16 MHz and stable over temperature and voltage with the ability to switch from a standby mode of 0.7 microamps to full operation in less than one micro-second. Ultra-low power standby combined with "instant-on" 16 MIPS lets high-performance systems to stay in standby longer, allowing applications to conserve power and use smaller batteries. Integrated peripherals that reduce cost and help keep tag and monitor circuits as small as their coin-sized batteries include analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), timers and comparators.

RFID-Enabled Asset Security
The costs of data loss often includes expensive compliance repercussions, with a growing number of laws requiring notification to every person whose identity may have been compromised due to a breach in data security. More than 30 states enforce such laws and stiff Federal legislation is in the offing. Sixty percent of individuals notified of loss of confidentiality are so offended that they sever all ties, or contemplate doing so, with the organization responsible for the information leakage.

Recent high-profile data security breaches through laptop theft or loss have made data loss incidents the target of intense media attention, incurring immeasurable damage to corporate reputation and customer trust. A recent security industry survey of 31 data breaches showed an average cost of $4.8 million per breach (Poneman Institute, LLC, October 2006). The cost of each lost record was calculated at $182. These estimates did not include the replacement of the lost equipment and software, or data reinstallation expenses, which are separately tallied at from $3,500 to over $6,000 for each lost laptop.

Corporations Keep Control, Avoid Damage Control
The new TagAlert was specially designed to prevent data loss problems from happening at all. Attachment is quick and easy, affording immediate asset protection. The TagAlert system uses the award winning technology of Remote Play, the technology leader in active-RFID tracking and securing of portable devices. This is the same team that commercialized portable digital audio technology in voice recorders and MP3 players with their last company, Digital5. Remote Play also provides permanent security installations that monitor movement of people, laptops, or other sensitive equipment at physical plants such as offices and hospitals. TagAlert is also used to track and secure other highly mobile and data-rich assets, including cell phones and briefcases.

About Remote Play
Remote Play, Inc. (RPI) is the leading provider of wireless products and networks based on radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to help individuals and organizations keep track of people or physical assets. Remote Play's patented SilverLink(TM) technology makes active RFID tags the basis of versatile, full-featured security systems. The systems can track multiple tags with a single base unit, and estimate how far a tagged asset is from the base. Using this powerful and flexible technology platform, RPI is creating product lines to address two growing markets: mobile security for consumers, and network-based tracking of people and assets for hospitals.
